Herbal Medicine

Bernadette Dowling

Herbal medicine is the oldest and most widely practiced form of medicine world wide. It uses plant remedies to heal diseases and ailments. These remedies could be in the form of herbal teas, tinctures and extracts, capsules, creams and oils. It offers a natural, effective approach to healthcare, and has been used for hundreds of years by a wide variety of people living all over the world. Over 80% of the world’s population today relies on herbs for their healthcare.

Medical Herbalists are trained in the same diagnostic skills as orthodox doctors, but take a more holistic approach to treatment by taking in to account the mind, body and spirit, as well as diet and lifestyle. A qualified Herbalist will have trained for at least 4 years and will be registered with a professional national institute.

The first consultation will take about 1 hour. Notes are taken on the patients case history both past and present, diet and lifestyle. This enables a picture to be made of that individual, and then herbs can be prescribed accordingly. Subsequent appointments depend on the patient and illness concerned, but in general will be every 2-4 weeks.

The benefits of herbs are huge. Herbs work to rebuild, nourish and heal. The body becomes rebalanced, which enables it to use its own wonderful healing powers. Herbs can be used as the sole therapy, or to compliment another type of treatment, and are helpful in reducing the side effects of many pharmaceutical drugs. Herbs can treat almost any condition that patients might take to their doctor, or can be used to prevent disease by strengthening the body and it’s immune system.

Common complaints seen include skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and acne, a wide variety of digestive disorders, arthritis, insomnia, migraines and headaches, respiratory problems such as bronchitis, asthma, recurring colds and hayfever. Successful treatment is also seen with high blood pressure, angina and varicose veins, and with gynaecological disorders such as premenstrual symptoms, the menopause and fertility.
