EMDR

Mary Mooney Sarah House

EMDR was developed by Francine Shapiro, an American psychologist, who observed that moving her eyes seemed to reduce the stress of upsetting memories. She went on to research this phenomenon and develop standard procedures to maximise this effect, now known as EMDR.

EMDR works on the premise that when something traumatic or distressing happens to us it can overwhelm our usual coping mechanisms and we store the memories dysfunctionally in an isolated memory network. EMDR therapy processes these unsettling memories and allows people to develop healthier coping strategies.

A client-led therapy, distinct from hypnotherapy, EMDR has been used where clients have expressed concern with.

  • Trauma e.g. emotional distress, disasters, accidents
  • Bereavement
  • Addiction and substance abuse
  • Depression
  • Phobias
  • Low self-esteem
